Why is it used in products?
It's trending in clean beauty for its protein content, antioxidant properties, and bright blue color that looks striking in products.
Why does it clog pores?
Blue algae extracts form a protein-rich biofilm on the skin surface that can block pore openings. They also contain compounds that stimulate excess cell turnover at the follicle mouth, which paradoxically leads to more dead-cell buildup. Their iodide content further compounds the pore-clogging risk.
