Butyl Stearate

What is Butyl Stearate?

A synthetic ester formed from butyl alcohol and stearic acid, used as a lightweight emollient and skin-conditioning agent.

Why is it used in products?

It gives products a smooth, non-greasy feel and helps other ingredients spread evenly on the skin.

Why does it clog pores?

Butyl stearate has been shown to be moderately comedogenic in dermatological testing. It penetrates into the follicular opening and creates a lipid plug that blocks sebum drainage. Its molecular structure is just the right size to get trapped in pores and promote comedone formation.
