What is Laureth-23?

A polyethylene glycol ether of lauryl alcohol with 23 moles of ethylene oxide, functioning as a solubilizer and emulsifier.

Why is it used in products?

It helps dissolve and incorporate oils into water-based formulations, acting as a more water-soluble emulsifier.

Why does it clog pores?

Despite its higher ethoxylation making it more water-soluble than Laureth-4, Laureth-23 can still deposit a pore-blocking film when left on skin. It helps solubilize oils in a way that can deposit them into follicular openings. Its comedogenic risk is moderate but real for acne-prone skin.
