Laureth-4

What is Laureth-4?

A polyethylene glycol ether of lauryl alcohol with 4 moles of ethylene oxide, used as a surfactant and emulsifier.

Why is it used in products?

It helps oil and water mix in formulations and provides mild cleansing action in wash-off and leave-on products.

Why does it clog pores?

Laureth-4 has a low ethoxylation level that makes it more lipophilic and prone to leaving a residue in pores. This residue blocks sebum flow and creates comedones. Its relatively small molecular size lets it penetrate into the follicular opening, where it's difficult to rinse away.
