What is Lauryl Alcohol?
A 12-carbon straight-chain fatty alcohol, a waxy solid used as an emollient, emulsifier, and thickening agent.
Why is it used in products?
It helps emulsify and thicken formulations while providing mild skin conditioning and a smooth texture.
Why does it clog pores?
Lauryl alcohol has a waxy consistency that forms a pore-sealing film on the skin surface. Its relatively small molecular size allows it to penetrate into follicular openings where it solidifies and blocks sebum flow. It's moderately comedogenic and is often a hidden contributor to breakouts.
