What is Porphyra?
A genus of red algae commonly known as nori, widely used in East Asian cuisine and increasingly in cosmetics.
Why is it used in products?
It provides vitamins, minerals, and mycosporine-like amino acids that offer natural UV protection and hydration.
Why does it clog pores?
Porphyra's polysaccharides form a sticky layer on the skin surface that blocks pore openings. As a red algae, it contains iodides and sulfated compounds that irritate the follicular lining. Even though nori seems harmless, its extract can trigger comedones in acne-prone individuals.
