Why is it used in products?
Its exopolysaccharides create a smooth, hydrating film on skin, and it's marketed as a natural alternative to hyaluronic acid.
Why does it clog pores?
The very exopolysaccharides that make this microalgae attractive as a moisturizer are the ones that seal pore openings. This gel-like film prevents sebum from flowing out of follicles, leading to comedone buildup. Its algae-derived minerals add further irritation to the follicular wall.
