What is Red Algae?
A large group of marine algae (Rhodophyta) that includes thousands of species, known for their sulfated polysaccharides like carrageenan and agar.
Why is it used in products?
Red algae extracts are popular for their hydrating, film-forming, and antioxidant properties across all types of skincare products.
Why does it clog pores?
Red algae species produce sulfated polysaccharides that form dense, gel-like films on the skin — essentially plastering over your pores. Their iodide content inflames the follicular wall, triggering inflammatory comedones. When you see "red algae" on a label, it could be any of dozens of pore-clogging species.
