What is Sargassum?
A genus of large floating brown seaweed found in tropical oceans, notable for forming massive surface mats in the Sargasso Sea.
Why is it used in products?
It provides antioxidants, minerals, and alginates, used in skincare for its hydrating and skin-protecting properties.
Why does it clog pores?
Sargassum contains high levels of iodides and produces alginates that form a dense gel film on skin. This film blocks sebum from exiting pores while the iodides inflame the follicular lining. It's a potent combination that makes sargassum one of the more comedogenic seaweed extracts.
