What is Wakame?
An edible brown seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida) widely used in Japanese and Korean cuisine and skincare for its rich nutrient profile.
Why is it used in products?
It's a K-beauty and J-beauty staple, prized for hydration, brightening, and its ability to inhibit hyaluronidase (the enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid).
Why does it clog pores?
Wakame contains significant iodide levels that trigger follicular inflammation and acne breakouts. Its fucoidan and alginate compounds form an occlusive gel that seals pore openings. If you're acne-prone, this is one of the biggest hidden triggers in Asian-influenced skincare products.
