What the checker does
Acne Safe normalizes ingredient names, compares them with entries and aliases in its screening database, and returns exact name-level matches.
How the screening list is built
The list consolidates cosmetic ingredient names historically discussed in comedogenicity testing and commonly used professional screening lists. The historical foundation includes J. E. Fulton Jr., Comedogenicity and irritancy of commonly used ingredients in skin care products, Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists 40 (1989), 321–333.
Important evidence limitations
- Concentration and formulation matter.
- Individual response varies.
- Historical tests are not modern product trials.
- Formulas change over time.
How to interpret a result
A match is a screening signal, not proof that a finished product causes acne. No match does not certify a product as non-comedogenic.
